Optimizing Comcast's Search Page Experience

Out with the old, in with the new

During a crucial switch for Comcast's Intranet, ComcastNow, I redesigned the search page to reflect the updated goals of the HR team.

Modernizing Comcast’s Employee Intranet Experience

Comcast’s intranet was an ecosystem of fragmented sites with 15+ distinct intranets, each with varying structures and design conventions. ComcastNow was the Internal Digital Communication team’s answer to unifying the intranet into one modern hub:

the problem

The existing design failed to reflect how people actually search for content

Users struggled to locate essential information, and early research showed that content was siloed and search filters lacked the flexibility needed to support real search behaviors.

Business alignment

In pursuit of a unified search experience

As Comcast continues to grow, so does the need for a better and universal intranet experience. Unifying all intranets under one hub strengthened brand credibility and enabled faster internal updates across all employee networks, but as content volume and organizational complexity increased, search became a point of friction for users.

IA testing sticky notes
how might we...

Redesign the search experience so it reflects how employees actually look for information?

By improving the usability, design, and layout of the search page, the benefits will be noticeable by four metrics:

Content Discoverability

Improved hierarchy, relevance cues, and filtering reduce search time and repeated queries

Trust & Adoption

When search works reliably, employees are more likely to rely on ComcastNow as a primary source of truth

Reducing Cognitive Load

A unified search can help significantly reduce the burden on the user and improve overall experience

Scalability

Standardized result patterns accommodate increasing volume without degrading usability

the solution

A unified, AI-powered search experience

Using Coveo to power SEO results and unify the search experience, I updated the design of the search page to match ComcastNow’s branding and fit the goals of the organization.

DESIGN

Prioritizing the employees' needs

While the method each user type used to navigate to their goal varied, there was alignment on two major search constraints that our users needed to filter by, plus an internal goal of pushing vital content to users:

Content Type

Users use content type to narrow their results

Organizational Structure

Comcast is divided internally by division, region, and organization

Optimized Results

Company-wide content pushed by the Comms team

atom 1: content types

Adding variety to boost visibility

ComcastNow features six different content types available via search that vary from regular articles to industry tools and organizational hierarchy. My interviews with employees revealed that many users struggled with identifying the content type on search results based on the icon.

Articles

News

People

Documents

This was a step forward to making content that was hidden in the past intranet more visible. By adding variety to the design, this introduced clearer visual patterns within results and made long-buried content types more recognizable at a glance.

Articles

Clear visual hierarchy aids users in scanning and identifying high-visibility updates.

Tools

A compact layout optimized for frequent-use links. Highlights the tool name and description so users can identify functional resources quickly without scrolling.

Events

Emphasizes date, time, and registration details in the expanded view. Designed for clarity so employees can quickly decide whether the event is relevant to them.

Documents

Shows metadata (file type, breadcrumb) to help users verify they’re opening the correct document.

People Cards

Displays name, role, location, and contact actions. Helps employees identify the right person quickly, especially across divisions or regions.

atom 2: organizational structure

Speaking the language at Comcast

With a global workforce and complex hierarchy, users rely heavily on division, region, organization, and department filters to narrow their search.

comcast organization structure

In card sorting and tree testing, users prioritized the divisions, organizations, and region filter over other filters to find the specific content they needed. I reflected this need directly into the search bar, maintaining the overall visual design of the search bar located in the global nav.

ATOM 3: seo optimization

Reaching the right user

Our team utilized Coveo to push results to certain user types and highlight relevant content based on the search input. One of the key issues with the old intranet was the lack of engagement on company-wide articles. This change needed to be reflected in the design as well, so I added a blue highlight to visually separate Coveo content from regular search results.

ComcastNow's updated search

The goal of ComcastNow is to become the source of truth for employee news, management, and company updates. Redesigning the search experience to maintain a clear and accessible design consistent with the rest of the hub moves it one step closer to that goal.
